1. a book with strong thematic and tonal unityPlease share your predilections with me. The future of poetry depends upon it. (not true, I don't know why I even said that.)
2. a book that is more various--in subject matter, tone, form
3. I hate poetry
4. are you talking about a seamless machine versus a kluged-together book? I love the word "kluge," so I want the kluged book. Okay, "various."
Kluged. Kluged!
ReplyDeleteI like the various. However, sometimes, I like the unity. But not so unified that it's boring. Where is that line? Unknown.
I feel your pain. I do.
maybe some of the poems that don't, on the surface, seem to fit, can fit on another, deeper level.
I'm split. I want a compilation that has a recurring tone while exploring all different kinds of subjects. Is there such a book?
ReplyDeleteI want the various but also I want to hear the poet's voice throughout--if that makes any sense at all.
ReplyDeleteVarious. There's a greater chance I will really connect with something in the book.
ReplyDeleteForgive me if I'm putting limitations on you as an artist by viewing this through the lens of gender, but one thing that seems constant in the life of a woman who, like yourself, is a family matriarch, is the (often exasperating) variety of our creations, tasks, and obligations. So, because it speaks to my experience, I'd vote for various.
