So Uncool You're Hot

Here's my challenge: what songs do you like that you can't admit to liking, because admitting that you like them would make you too geeky to live?

I confess:

Backstreet Boys, "I Want it That Way"

Runner up:

Hanson, "Mmmm Bop"

  1. Beastie Boys "You Gotta Fight for Your Right To Party"; Billy Joel "The Piano Man"

  2. Huey Lewis and the News "I Want a New Drug"; I just heard it on the radio this morning and found my foot tapping; terrible, terrible

  3. The radio brings it out, don't it? There is such a thing as a radio song. Many, many Duran Duran songs fall in this category.

  4. I love (love love love) Pyromania by Def Leppard. It may have something to do with the fact that I had just learned to drive and my friend had a convertible (it was a Chrysler, but still) and he let me drive it. I put my Def Leppard tape in (no, it wasn't 8 track) and we drove around for hours, stopping only to buy Frostys with the change we scrounged off the floor of the car.
Also, I love Hanson. I love all things Hanson. Greil Marcus wrote a great essay about how they were pure, genius pop and how one should not be ashamed to adore them and their sugary sweet music. And so I am not. Ashamed.

  5. In a similar vein to Clint, ABBA, any.

    I can't help myself.

  6. Hi Lisa, just stopped by to say hello. Who knows if you'll find this comment; it's been awhile since you made this post, no? The problem with everyone's comments is that their songs are too dated. In the spirit of Middlebrow's Humiliation: The Game, the humiliation should very much live in present tense.

So I volunteer Britney Spears' "Toxic," which I have been known to sing at karaoke in perfect falsetto.

  7. Okay, you're right, sleepy-e. In honor of the ever-present glory of bad yet irresistible pop music, I admit that I love that Christina Aguilera song "Fighter." If I could be her in that video, O! I would be.
